The Ozarks are the cradle of country music. The music became famous in Nashville through a radio show called the Grand Ole Opry. Jimmy Thompson, an 88 year-old man and his niece would sing country songs for an hour. The first country hit "It Ain't Gonna Rain No Mo" came out in 1923 by Wendell Hall.

According to Robert Sheldon, writer of the The Country Music Story, the five most influential people of the "Nashville sound" were Roy Acuff, the Carter Family, Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, and Johnny Cash.
