British Music Comes to America

When Rock and Roll's rejuvenation came, it was from a place small and unlikely, and far away...one thing Liverpool had was a brimming pop scene, made up of bands playing tough and exuberant blues- and R&B-informed rock and roll. -- Page 25, Night Beat

British music came to America around the mid 60's, and kind of stole the attention that was focused on Folk Music. The image of British music was very clean cut happy music. And excellent example is the Beatles.

While the whole Rock and Roll craze was dying down in America, it was beginning in Europe. The British went back to the roots of American Rock and Roll, and brought Rock and Roll back. According to Ian Whitcomb, a British singer, these are the songs that molded English rock:

Artist Song
Bill Haley Rock Around the Clock
Jerry Lee Lewis Great Balls of Fire
Elvis Hound Dog
Big Bopper Chantilly Lace
Chuck Berry Sweet Little Sixteen
Buddy Holly That'll Be the Day
Fats Domino Ain't That a Shame
Little Richard Tutti Frutti
Eddie Cochran Summertime Blues

British Rock music became known in 1964 with the arrival of the Beatles. They were a huge sucess in the US and England. Other bands like the Rolling Stones came from England. After their success, American-made British wannabe bands like the Monkees began to pop up.
