"Music...teaches values like discipline, and it involves thinking, heart, emothions....music...requires all your senses to do it well."

Classical Brass and J-Pop
Interview with Eldon Seta, Music Director, Moanalua High School

Mr. Seta is the Music Director at Moanalua High School. We started off by asking, how he got into music and why he enjoys it so much.

Seta said that he started in 7th grade beginning band, at first he thought it was boring but after high school decided he wanted to go into music education.

He said that the best thing about teaching music is being able to something everyday that he loves. Music also teaches values like discipline, and it involves thinking, heart, emothions. He says music is one that requires all your senses to do it well.

He recently took a trip to Japan because he is fascinated with their culture. While he was there he taught english and participated in bands. He talked about how the Japanese music education system is so different from our country. The students are on such a higher level that you cannot compare them to student musicians here.

He also talked about how the cultural values are different so they play music for different pruposes.

We asked him about music in japan (nicknamed "J-pop") and it turns out he listenes to many japanese artists. He says that music is not that much different from music here. There are more original songs, and their easir to listen to, not as harsh as some american music. He said that the words are easy to understand, and they don't have to rhyme.

We asked him about subjects of songs and he said it's pretty much the same as here. There's love songs, and some issue and protest music. One group "Tube" that he listens to only sings about summer and the beach.

He talked about how important music is to the japanese culture. He says that there's whole floors for each genre and people listen to all types. He mentioned how there's such a small classical section in music stores here, but in japan it's very big and always filled.

He says that people in japan (band people) really play music on an emotional level. Although they are very emotionally controlled, they really let it out in music.

He says that the biggest joy in playing music in Japan was that it was heartfelt.

We asked him what he thought or our site and the simulations. He remembered the Gaiagotchi from last year and thought it would be neat to have a music gotchi. Different types of music would affect different types or growth. If you fed it too much punk, the intellegence might go down and hair would get longer. Maybe it you fed it too much classical music it might look like this.

He mentioned some articles about babies and Mozart and we figured we could probably find others and use them for resources. Mom knew about studies done on music and plants etc.

Seta said for the music composition section he pictured something where users can take pre-made melodies and drum beat, put them together and see what happens.
