What do you think of your children's music?
An intergenerational interview by Rock Revolution
RR: Why do you listen to music like the *BHG?
I used to listen to that kind of music all the time when I was young. I kind of like the more rough music like Hellacopters and Backyard Babies. It's more pure and simple then sleesy Spice Girls bands. I still prefer music like Radio Heads and Smashing Pumpkins. Because I like it. It's cool.
RR: Why do you think they're popular with young people?
I think all youth looks for role models. Today it is not easy to revolt against parents. My generation would not raise their eyebrowes to piercing, green hair or any kinds of attributes. If you want something that is not like your parents it has to stick out more like for instance Blood Hound Gang. But at the same time the oldies seem to get a lot of listener. Stones attracts a lot of listeners that are young. Because they play good. You can play it loud.
RR: Do you think kids like the music for the music itself or more for its shock value or rebellion?
I really think that most of the texts are good enough to listen to. Sometimes it's of course pathetic, and maybe Blood Hound Gang is. Then the reason my be rebellion or shock. But most of the kids I meet chose music that are anti materialistic and I think they are sound. I don't know. Why is it shocking?
RR: What do your parents think about the BHG?
They thought my music taste was terrible. It was much easier reacting towards their generation because they reacted against everything. My kids have a hard time chosing something I think is terrible. They don't like it but they don't mind.
RR: What do your friends' parents think about them listening to music like the BHG?
Most of my friends parents reacted the same way. They tried to forbid the music. Now most of my friends are parents and don't react at all. It's okay
RR: Are there any other groups like the BHG that are popular?
Well a lot of the gangsta rap songs are like that. I am especially irritated by the way they look at women. Many but I can't think of anyone right now.
