Kalle Lundstrom, midi composing

The Happy Country
by iLL

In the small happy country, everything was nice and peaceful.
Everyone had their own field, and no one was dissatisfied.
They lived in peace with nature, and everything it could give.
What happened to the people, you soon will see.

A rich man came to the country, with beautiful golden studs.
He bought himself a house, and thought "this was nice".
He needed some cattle(s), and wheat seed to sow.
But there was something that the man couldn't understand.

With his small brain he thought like this:
"Because I'm rich and have money, I don't need to do all this."
He went to his neighbour, and gave hime a proposal.
And since that, everything has got worse day by day.

Before the man came, the people never had seen gold.
Neither heard the conceptions: "Pay" or "owe money".
Now they started competing, and fighting with eachother.
This was the story about how the happy country disappeared.

RR: How do you get ideas for your songs? (event, line, emotion, etc.)

Kalle: Nowadays, it's very hard to write your "own" songs. I mean, almost everything is done. So when writing a new song, much depends on what you have heard on the radio, the bands you like, and maybe the bands you don't like. You take small pieces from different areas, I think.

RR: Describe your composing process.

Kalle: It often starts with a small melody that pops up in my head. I record it, an then I develop that part. After that, I usually do the drums. It's hard stuff doing that on a keyboard, but since I'm a drum player, it's a pitty :-).

RR: What comes first--lyrics or melody?

Kalle: I don't write lyrics for my midi compositions, but when we write songs with ILL, the rock band, melody is always coming first.

RR: How long does it take you to compose a song?

Kalle: From two hours to many weeks. The good part with midi is that it is very easy to record. You have all instruments in your computer. You don't need a big studio with expensive amps and microphones. But it's always hard to make it sound natural, that's the bad part with midi!

RR: Why do you compose?

Kalle: I'm very interested in music, and I want to learn more. The best way to learn more about music is certainly by composing. The result of all that ours composing may not be a great song all the times, but at least, I've learnt something.

RR: How many songs have you composed?

Kalle: Hehe, not many. Maybe ten, where 2-3 is is good. After all, I'm not a keyboard player :-)

RR: Do you ever get inspiration from other pieces of music?

Kalle: Yes, all the time. You have to.
