Rock Revolution and the Online Jam--Nordic Tracks!

"So I edited and mixed and sent everything to the server 72 mb...and I was on a slow line. It took nearly twelve hours....I was relived when I heard that it had reached Hawaii and that they could really play it. I could rest easy and sit back and wait for their additions."

Thanks to the folks at Res Rocket and to Kalle for the free private studio just for Rocking the Revolution!!!

Kalle

I got a mission from the Hawaiian head quarters: record a drumtrack. Why? Because I'm a drummer and we needed a drumtrack for our online jam!

Ok, I went to my friend and fellow rock band member Johans's home. He's got a small studio, good enough to record the drums. We made an easy recording with four microphones through a mixer and an effect box (a little bit of room reverb) into a tape recorder. I played for some two minutes just thinking about how it would sound when we added the bass and the guitars. After 2-3 times I was pleased and the recording was done. After that I put the tape in an protective envelope and mailed it to Lars-Erik. Easy, huh??

Lars-Erik

As a base playerI have always dreamt about possibilities to jam. Bass is no fun to play by yourself. OK - you can always put on a record and play along but then you have someone else outplaying you. At least if you are an amateur like I am.

Well one day I got a brown thing with the mail. Brown things are ok when they don't have windows because then they spell invoices or plain bills. But when they don't have a window it's usually something nice. In this case it was a tape from Kalle, on the Rock revolution team so I run up the stairs and put the tape in my taperecorder.

Kalle is a good drummer and it made me a bit nervous. I just didn't want to appear bad so I got on the phone to the musical genious in our teachers band (the name of the bad shall remain a secret but I can tell you we play becuase we love to play not because we know how to). Except for Lars then who graciously told me I could come around and he would help me.

So Lars recorded a nice 12 bar bass sling and while at it also a guitar solo and showed me how to mix it. Later I went home and practised for a while before recording it. Talk about cheating eh.

Now I had another problem to solve. Should I send it all back to Kalle by mail and have him edit and mix on the computer. That would have been the correct decision because he is much better at that then me (later he told me the files were peaked". We decided against anyway. We don't trust the Swedish mail that much. I might have been lost and the chance it would have ended up in a music publishers office giving us a million dollar contract we found fairly remote.

So I edited and mixed and sent everything to the server 72 mb + 40 mb for Lars dreamdiary and I was on a slow line. It took nearly twelve hours. Of course I knew nobody in their right mind would download that. Still I was relived when I heard that it had reached Hawaii and that they could really play it. I could rest easy and sit back and wait for their additions.
