Tuba
The Tuba is essentially a family of large bugles with
valves. It has a deep, powerful tone and has the role of holding the Brass section
together with its simple rhythmic phrases.
Orchestral Tubas come in five sizes and first appeared
in German military bands in the 1820's. They occasionaly have seperate names such as
the Euphonium or Saxhorn.
The Tuba is not really suited to solo parts, but
Vaughan Williams wrote 'Romance for Bass Tuba and orchestra' which was first performed in
1954.
