Trumpets
The Trumpet's bright and brilliant tone mean that it is
in more at home playing fanfare-like passages, but the modern instrument is very versatile
and can play melodic phrases very capably. Trumpet chords are particularly exciting.
Modern Trumpets are direct descendants of Military and
Ceremonial Trumpets, with the addition of piston valves. The development of the
Trumpet mirrors that of the horn and they were popular in the 17th century despite their
limited ability to produce notes.
The Cornet is a smaller relative of the Trumpet which
contains the same valve setup, and the two instruments are interchangeable in terms of
playing method. Bach's second Brandenburg Concerto and Shostakovich's Concerto for
Piano, Trumpet and Strings show what can be done with the solo instrument.
