Piccolo
The shrill, bright tone of the Piccolo playfully lifts
the mood of a piece as it embelishes a familiar tune and to a large extent this is its
only role within the orchestra. It is of little use as a supporting instrument due
to its piercing voice and is thus confined to music of a more dance-like quality.
The Piccolo is the smallest member of the Flute family and it rarely plays a major role in an orchestral work.
