Double Basses
The Double Bass plays the anchor role in the orchestra,
providing a solid and usually simple but effective foundation around which the rest of the
orchestra can embelish. The Double Bass is considerably larger than the cello and
thus has a much deeper, more powerful tone. The Double Bass' unique ability to
singlehandedly hold together a piece has led it into the world of popular music, most
notably jazz and blues. There are few examples of Double Bass concertos, but
composers such as Bottessini and Koussevitzky have written for the instrument.
