Second Violins
The Second Violins form the inner, supporting part of
the orchestra. They are often used by composers to provide harmony or echo First
Violin phrases in the form of a canon.
When cast in the supporting role, the Violin can
provide gentle, sensitive accompaniment acting opposite virtually any instrument.
Beethoven's 'Spring' Violin Sonata provides a brilliant example of the versatility of the
instrument, with the Violin and Piano taking turns in the leading and supporting
roles.
