I will be forever indebted to anyone who can help me with this question and the ones that follow it:
Why do airports have three-letter codes? Often, it seems like the first two letters are abbreviation of the city name and the third is tacked on (e.g. SFO, LAX, PDX) - why three letters then instead of two?
Why do Canadian airports' codes start with Y? Why the X in LAX and PDX?
Who came up with these codes? When did it become standardized? Was it something that came from the military?
Any help will be appreciated, the sooner the better (this is one of these "I don't want to look clueless in front of the kids" situations)!!!
