The atom wasn't really discovered. The greek that the other person is referring to postulated the existence of atoms a few thousand years ago. However, atomic theory as we know it today didn't develop until a few hundred years ago. It's hard to say who discovered the atom, persay, because we just assume they exist. You can, however, say who discovered the electron, the proton, the neutron, etc.

For instance, rutherford discovered that an atom has a positively charged nucleus.

A greek named Democlydes (or something like that)discovered the atom a few hundred years b.c. Atom means that it can't be separeted,it's the smallest thing there is. But we now know, its not.
