Marie Curie & Pierre Curie discovered the radioactivity.
In 1932 Sir John Douglas Cockroft and Ernest T. S. Walton got to break 1 lithium in 2 atoms of helium. Otto Hahn and Strassmann improved and Lise Meitner wrote the paper about and called it fission, by the first time. Fermi got to make it under control.

Check out Enrico Fermi

The first reactor was built under the football stadium in Chicago back in the early 1940s and was a graphite pile reactor.
