Covalent Bonding
Covalent Bonds
"Name's Bond, Covalent Bond." Ok, fine, that was pretty bad, but hey,
I had to do it. Now on with the actual material. Covalent bonds are the
weaker of the two main types of intramolecular bonds. I say "main types"
because I am sure that other types of intramolecur bonds. Well, covalent
bonds occur when two atoms of similar electronegativity share electrons,
as opposed to ionic bonding, where the difference in the electronegativity
of the two atoms are so immense that there is a lose/gain relationship.
99% of the time, covalent bonds occur between two nonmetals. Nonmetals
are the elements on the right side of the periodic table that is to the
right of the "staircase" that separates the metals from the nonmetals.
A few nonmetals are N (nitrogen), O (oxygen), F(fluorine), and Ne (neon).
That's about it on this topic.
