El Niņo reversed the trade winds, landing a mass of warm water right off the coast of South America. Because of the proximity to the source of the weather changes that occurred all over the world, the countries of South America always suffer greatly from El Niņo. This year, despite the extra rain that came, Chile set records with extremely high temperatures. So it was a hot year, but there was still a lot of rain like most other countries of the continent.
Severe storms in central Chile were the result of El Niņo, striking in June, July and August. However, many more storms preceded these during the winter season, causing the country to receive ten times the normal amount for the year. The capital, Santiago, received more than a year's normal ration of rain (300 millimeters) in only one month (June).
