Before people invented pens and paper,
they had to pass down information verbally, or save primitive information with knots or shells on strings.
At about 25000 years BC, cave paitings appeared,
hieroglyphics, or picture words which portrayed events.
This kind of writing was popular, among others,
in North America, the Indians and the Eskimos used it.
Some scholars say, that Sumers invented writing in circa 3500 years BC. Their writing was based on syllables and signs that didn't only show a thing (for examlpe 'mouth'), but also the things, that it does ('to eat' or 'to speak'). Their invention was popularized in Babylon.
|Egyptian hieroglyphs trace their origin back to this kind of writing. Egyptians invented their form of writing in about 2000 years BC. It is very courtly. That's why Greeks named it 'hieroglyphs'. In Greek it means 'the writing of gods'. The Rosetta stone helped people to unlock the secrets of hieroglyphs. It bears a decree drawn up in 196 BC by the priests of Memphis. It was written in three languages: Egyptian hierogliphes, Egyptian demotic and in Greek.|
|Through years the styles of writing also has changed. In the Middleages only monks could write. Their style was called Gothic, in the XVth century the pope recommended the italic writing. Since 1700 popular has been the copperplate, people wrote each word without tearing the pen from the paper.|
Moreover some people invented different kinds of
writings. Braille devised a system of writing for the
blind. It includes 63 signs for every letter, number.
The sign is a group of pionts arranged in three rows.
It's area isn't larger than the tip of the finger.
Here's an example of letters. '*'- it is convex,
'0'- means it is not.|
Musicians also have their own kind of writing. They use
notes. Bass and treble clef help them give the notes reference to the instruments they play. People can also write dances, sometimes we think that can't be done. These special signs
are called labanotation.
|Now, not everyone can write, but most of us can't imagine living without letters. The ancient civilizations who invented these written languages have devised one of the biggest contrivances of the mankind.|
