| Name: Stephen R. Nix Email: snixnic@ibw.com.ni Title: Trip to Bluefields September 10, 1998 | We had a wild time a few days ago, when we boarded an old school bus in Managua at 10 PM and headed for El Rama, the end of the road in those parts. For the next 9 hours, we shared the space with a ton of other people and items, which filled the aisle, and under the seats, as well as overhead. At one point, even a dog was a passenger. Some of the holes in the road looked like bomb craters, and several times the chassis of the bus literally dragged on the bottom of the road trying to climb out. On the smaller chuckholes, the bus would bounce so hard and twist the chassis so that the windows would all go slamming down. Hours later, black and blue from the bouncing and jostling, bleary-eyed and nearly delirous, we climbed off the bus and jumped into the panga waiting to take us 2 hours down the Escondido River ... but that's another story! |
| Name: Rochelle Nix Email: rnix@iupui.edu Title: Masaya Volcano September 10, 1998 | My parents live in Managua, Nicaragua and when I went to visit for the first time they took me to see the Masaya Volcano. We were able to walk right up to the edge and look down hundreds of feet to the smoldering lava below...no barriors to keep one from falling in!!! Although the fumes were a little overwhelming at times, it was one of the most breathtaking experiences I have ever had. |
| Name: Stephen R. Nix Email: snixnic@ibw.com.ni Title: Panga Flyin' Low! September 22, 1998 | From El Rama, there are two major choices for getting down the
Escondido River to Bluefields: the slow boat or the pangas. A
nominal time for departure is around 6 am, and they'll tell you
to be on the docks at 5 to be sure ... and it's good to listen,
because a friend of mine came at the usual time, and he got
left behind! However, if the busses from Managua are late
(more often late than not), nothing could move those panga
drivers to start their engines, because a full boat is
gravy for the trip. Once we sat on the boards for the passengers
for 2 hours waiting for the busses to arrive!
The engines finally rev up, and when they kick in anywhere from 150 to 175 horsepower, the tip of the boat begins to lift up and high, wide rooster-tails of wake begin to rush behind the boat. It's no mean feat, considering they load anywhere from 12 to 16 passengers plus their luggage, as well as the pilot. As the speed mounts, the spray rises nearly 2 feet above the gunwales of the boat. Those in the back two rows know how to calculate how many inches their elbows can stick out before the entire arm gets soaken wet with the spray. Having ridden the bus all night before, there's nothing like the thrill of the wind whistling through your hair -- the cool rush of speed and movement almost being enough to offset the hardness of the plank that's your seat for 2 hours downriver. Unless a storm begins to brew ... in that case, the temperature begins to drop, and as the rain beings to drop, out comes the black plastic sheets for protection. We all huddled under it, and due to the speed and wind, each grabbed a handful of the sheet's edge and hung on for dear life. It was kind of like the sensation of parachuting in reverse! Never a dull moment ... traveling in Nicaragua! |
| Name: Eugenia Slater Email: euslater@hotmail.com Title: Safety/Roads September 22, 1998 | I'll be going to Nicaragua with my husband in December. I'm looking for input from anyone who has traveled to the Costa Rican border (and entered Costa Rica) as well as up to Esteli in the north that can relay their opinions about travel safety and road conditions to these two points from Managua. We're also going out to Granada. Would really appreciate hearing from you. |
| Name: Team 17749 Email: tq17749@hotmail.com Title: RE: Safety/Roads September 25, 1998 |
Concerning safety on the roads, there's nothing to worry
about on the way to Costa Rica. Esteli, however, still has
a bad rap and my family, which has always lived abroad in South
America, doesn't go there. Road conditions to Costa Rica have recently improved a lot,
but Esteli is still typically bad.
Granada is undoubtedly the nicest city in the country. The people and the surroundings there are somehow apart from the rest of the country. Be sure to take a boat ride through the islands when you go. |

| Name: Yvonne Nix Email: snixnic@ibw.com.ni Title: Tremors October 19, 1998 | Yesterday, Oct.18, we were awakened by a very strong earth tremor. Although it is normal to have tremors, this one was strong enough to rattle the windows and vibrate knick knacks off the shelves. A few minutes later, there was an even stronger one. We later learned it registered 4.30 on the Richter scale. The tremor was centered in Ticuantepe, south of Managua. All through the day tremors continued, though not with the intensity of the first 2. The radio was giving out advisories as to what to do in case of an actual earthquake. The only reported demage I have heard about was in Ticuantepe, where some houses were damaged and a couple of people were injured from something falling on them. Today, classes were suspended there. As far as our family was concerned, a couple of knick-knacks were broken when they vibrated off the shelves. We and our neighbors ran out doors every time a tremor would come, as this is what the radio advised. I had never been in an earthquake so I was a little aprehensive, especially since my husband was on an out of town trip at the time. I think those who were here during the 1972 earthquake were probably very aprehensive. Light tremors continued though the night and are still happening today. We pray that Nicaragua will be spared the repetition of the tragic experience it had to endure a little over 20 years ago. God is merciful, we are at peace in His hands. |

| Name: Stephen Nix Email: snixnic@ibw.com.ni Title: Hurricane in Nicaragua October 30, 1998 | Just a short note to let you know that we are all alive and well here in
Nicaragua. You may have heard about the effects of the hurricane on
Nicaragua and Honduras, so we thought we'd give an update.
While there has been no actual damage from high winds, there has been considerable problem with torrential rains that have produced dangerous flooding in various parts of the country. This afternoon, a national disaster was declared for many areas of the country, so as to apply for international relief aid. However, here in Managua, we are quite safe, although a bit humid! This evening the rains have tapered off, and if it continues this way, we will be ok, and just faced with a massive cleanup in the country. There have been over 60,000 people evacuated out of areas all over the country, some being rescued from tree tops by army helicopters. Many smaller cities and villages are cut off from contact, no electric, water, medicine or food. However, civil defense, Red Cross, fire department and other govt. agencies are working hard to stabalize the situation. Transportation outside of Managua has been all but totally cut off, because of severe flooding in parts of highways, huge holes in the road due to mud washout underneath the pavement, and in various locations, entire bridges broken, covered in water or washed away by river currents. We are just finishing our Bible School session, but 15 pastors will have to remain in Managua until travel is opened again, as they are all from inaccessible areas. |

I do know that while Boaco was affected by the heavy rains, it is not one of the worst disaster areas, which are further north. For a while, the area was cutoff, due to massive flooding of the Las Banderas bridge, but the waters have abated enough that traffic can now get through to the south. In reality, I think you stand a good chance of getting a job if you are experienced in upper level management (especially in the financial sector) or have technical skills such as network installation. If you are looking for a typical US job such as data entry or mechanics, you will be in trouble. Many businesses have web sites which are listed under "Nicaraguan Web Sites" in the Interactive section and I suggest that you contact some of them. |

We stayed in Managua and in a mountain town called Santo Domingo, over a course of 10 days. It was honestly the most amazing experience of my life, the country is so gorgeous and, to put it bluntly, it really gave me an incredible feeling: Canada is so inhabited and surrounded by first-world civilization. Travelling through the Nicaraguan mountains on a rickety school bus down dirt roads, the forests and valleys and sheer beauty of its natural wonders was really humbling and amazing. The culture was also so beautiful, the differences were so interesting. Of course, I was deeply saddened by its current political state and the horrible poverty levels, it's so sad that they have one of the most gorgeous countries but still live in such poor conditions. I could talk forever about all the experiences I had on this trip, but the bottom line is that it is an amazing country, one which I would definately like to visit again in the future. It really opened my eyes--there is definitely so much more to this world than what lies outside our own back doors. |

Better yet let me tell you how to get there and you can go visit them yourself. It is run by an indigenous order of nuns, Siervas del Divino Rostro (Servants of the Divine Image), an order that was founded about 7 years ago in San Fernando, Nueva Segovia. El Crucero is south of Managua at about the 25 kilometer marker on the trans-american highway (caraterra sur). Just as you get to El Crucero turn left at the triangle shaped park (this is the road to Los Nubes). Then take the first right (the road is Callejon Lourdes but of coures it isn't marked). The Hogar del Nino is the first big house on the left. Call before you go 291-2340 (or if you're calling from the U.S. 011-505-291-2340. The orphanage has no single source of support and is always in need of food, medical supplies, toys, etc. There are always handyman type jobs that need to be done (multiply the number of things that one of your children can break, times the number of children at the orphanage and you'll get the picture). But even if the kids were perfect angels the fact is that most of the materials that went into building the orphanage were not equal to U.S. standards and so they fall apart faster. And then add to that the fact that the sulfer dioxide from Volcano Masaya blows directly over the orphanage and causes everything to rust in no time at all. I'm sure that if you ask, they can tell you what it is that they need most. Of course the one thing that costs nothing to give is a hug, and there are plenty of children there who need hugs. Give them one from "Don Daniel" |

Nobody in the USA warned me about the police over there! If you go and plan to drive over there it is almost guaranteed that you WILL get pulled over. I was stopped 9 times during my 2-week stay (by the way, I do have an excellent record in the US, no tickets and no accidents). Be ready, they're hungry... specially for nice looking rental cars!! |

| Name: melissa Santerre Email: melsanterre2@sympatico.ca Title: Smiles of the South April 26, 19100 | On December 20,1999, I left Montreal airport with 14 other students from North-South Profile at Dawson College. Our first 3 days were spent in Managua at the Casa Canadiense. TThis was a time to adapt to this new culture before we went to Nandaime, a small village situated at about 1 1/2 hour bus ride from the capital. For me it was really hard to face this new reality and a lot of questions and also a feeling of anger came up to me. On our second day we visited the garbage dump and this experience left me blank. I could not say a word and I think that all the group was very affected by this too. But we had to move on because it was only the begining of our trip. We then left for Nandaime. The first night we slept at the Centro Communitario, and then the next day we were place in our families where we would be living for the next 2 weeks. The first days were not easy and the lack of communication didn't help. But after a while a became closer to my family and we were able to share a lot even though I could not understand everything. During our stay in Nandaime we took off for two days to go on Isla Zapaterra, a refugee camp. It was a very quiet place and I liked it a lot. The day we got there, we set up our hammocks on the trees. At night we got into our hammocks and just when we had fallen asleep it started raining. It was a very intriguing stay. On our way back a lot of things happen but it would be too long to tell you. Anyways, we got back to Nandaime and we continued attending conferences and exchanging with the people there. OUr days were charged and we didn't have that much time for ourselves but we learned a lot there. After 14 days there we went to an agricultural cooperative situated at 20 minutes from Nandaime. We stayed there for 5 days. There we had more time to ourselves and I really enjoyed bathing in the river, reading and going for walk with Nicaraguan friends. The people there are more shy but I prefered that place because of the atmosphere. We also had conferences there and helped the people to dig a water trench. The last three days of our fieldtrip in Nicaragua were spent in Managua, at the same place as before. The very last day of this experience was the most difficult but the most important moment of my life. We went to visit an organization that were taking care of the street children. They took us in the streets of Managua with them. We met prostitues and homeless kids sniffing glue. They seemed in another world and it was hard not to realize their situation at that moment. We also met teenagers who were pregnants. A lot of them were sniffing glue at the same time. They were so happy to see us and to show us their kid's stuff. I will remember these moment forever. People in Nicaragua had smiles on their faces unlike people here in Quebec. They seemed happy and I still remember all of their faces looking at me walking down the street. This experience has changed me forever. I would like to know what you are going to do with what people sent you? Can we read these texts somewhere? |

The people were all so very accepting, gracious, loving and helpful. (especially with my very limited Spanish & when we both had DENGE FEVER at the same time!) We lived in Masaya and saw just a bit of the country, but it is all so beautiful. To read, hear, know and even see the devistion of the long ago earthquake, the civil war, then MITCH and then the resent earthquakes, you realize they have been through so very much and just keep trying so very hard to keep making their lives and their country productive again. We are planning on returning for a couple of weeks in Jan. '01 . As a person from USA, I am so very blest with so much materially, but realize even more that we must share the LORD's WORD, but also at the same time, His blessing of material help to others. Enjoyed reading the various letters. Thanks all for sharing. |

| Name: Ronald F. Gilbert Email: chiefron586@cs.com Title: Our Vacation May 4, 19101 | This past March 2001 my wife and I went on a Panama Canal cruise on the Holland America Cruiseship the "Amsterdam". We first stop at St. Thomas, V.I. then on to Willemstad, Curacao a beautiful island with different colored houses and buildings. Then we set sail to the Panama Canal. It was very nice and interesting. Once out of the canal and into the Pacific Ocean it was off to San Jaun delSur, Nicaragua. While sailing we saw Dolfins, Flying fish, Sea Turtles and Marlin jumping out of the water. When we got to San Jaun del Sur we took a bus tour to Managua where my wife did some sort of native "Hat Dance" with a native. It was so funny, she didn't have a clue but it looked like she knew just what she was doing. Next it was off to see the Masaya volcano. This was great, it was my first time I have ever seen a real volcano. My wife and I walked up the 187 steps to the top of the crater. The sulfur fumes was overwhelming at times and you could actually see the yellow smoke or fumes from the volcano. Man it was great! Being that close to an active volcano, wow! I took almost the whole roll of film on this volcano, I loved it!!!!! (Today Is May 4th 2001 and as I was watching the news tonight on TV I heard that the Masaya Volcano erupted and they showed pictures of all the smoke, rocks, and ash blowing out of it) It was a site to see watching it on TV. I'm glad it didn't happen when we were at the top. Well it's time to go back to the ship. While traveling back I noticed a police officer walking down the street in town with a machine gun strapped to his back and another one carrying a shot gun. This made me a little uncomfortable. Out tour guide said it was normal (ya, right). Nicaragua is a nice country but, they need to focus on cleaning the trash up (plastic bags, papers and other debris laying all over the place. Back at the ship we set sail for our last stop Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica. We did not stay long at Golfo Dulce, we had to take a tour bus and go to the airport in Liberia. This was about a two and one half hour ride. We saw monkeys, lizards and all kinds of birds. Costa Rica was cleaner than Nicaragua but we couldn't really enjoy it. We caught a plane to Miami and then off to Atlanta GA. and finally home Providence, R.I. We would like to visit Nicaragua again someday, Hopefully the goverment will start picking up the trash. We will never forget Nicaragua |
