Will the Sandinistas ever regain the power that they once had in the government? What would it take to cause the masses to rise up in another revolution to overthrow the existing government?

Probably not, given broad U.S. influence over the area.

The fruits of the sandinista revolution were huge and are being chipped away by Aleman and the international finance community. It does seem clear though that Nicaragua is not in a position to sustain one. In saying that, it is must be very difficult for the sandinismo to see their amazing gains chipped away. I think that the litmus test may come with how Aleman treats civil society like the communal movement and the NGO's. The Movimento Communale Nicaraguanese is a movement that the West could look towards as the ultimate in community self help and has been instrumental in distributing aid after the hurricane. If Aleman hits these, then added factors like poor housing and land rights, unemployment, student funding and loss of dignity might just people over the edge. Hopefully an election may come first.

IT WILL BE VERY HARD FOR ANOTHER MASS UPRISING TAKING PLACE IN NICARAGUA; PARTICULARLY WHEN THE PEOPLE ARE FIGHTING FOR THEIR OWN SURVIVAL ON AN EVERYDAY BASIS. THE SANDINISTA LEADERSHIP WAS DICREDITED BY OTHERS AS WELL AS BY THEIR STUPID BLUNDERS WHICH PAVED THE WAY FOR THE PRESENT POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT.

When the Sandinistas came to power in 1979, I was 8 years old. Eventhoug, I was quite young. I saw first hand the devastation they caused to the contry. The first thing they did was destroy the private industry by confiscating factories, businesses, and the like. Next thing we kwew, the free enterprise was crushed. People waiting in long lines to buy their ration of food and toiletries replaced it. Those individuals, lucky enough to still own property and have resources, worked in fear, not knowing when the Sandinista government would knock on their front door to inform them that their property, earned with hard work, was no longer theirs because it was going into the hands of a high raking Sandinista official or supporter. Thier theory was that everybody had to be poor but themselves. I despise them for what they did to the country and its people. I think the majority of Nicaraguans have wised up and would not allow them back in power. Frankly, I am not sure what fuits Mr. Dupre is talking about. He probably lived in one of the confiscated mansions the Sandinistas were happy to provide to their international guests, shopped at their exclusive supper markets, and drove their luxury automobiles.

I am not a sandinista supporter but i think that they can because they still have an influence in the gov't and have many supporters. But many people that i know in Nicaragua think that Daniel Ortega and Aleman have some sort of a deal going on.

I believe the Sandinistas had their chance, and it did not work. Yes,,,i most agree the current goverment is not doing Nicaragua any good but we most keep on searching. The last thing our beloved Nicaragua needs is a nother war, lets not forget that wars are the reason we are in the pit we are. Is time that we give democracy a chance, some one will rise out of the darkness and give us that leadership that will make this new millenium the begining of great things for our great nation

No the sandinistas will never regain power or popularity, no as long as real Nicaraguans the ones who sufered under their criminal dictatorship are still alive and kicking, there is no more room in this modern world for people like them, everybody knows what they did to Nicaragua and their people it is because of them that millions left their dreams and their lifetime behind to start a new one that was not needed, the whole world knows they once help and housed terrorist and agresors, the Nicaraguan people has spoken and decided for three consecutive times that they don`t want anything with the sandinistas and i think that they are a bunch of thieves and hipocrats in thinking that they will make their way to power from the publics vote, not after what they put them through we will never forget the atrocities, the genocide, the sufering they put the entire country trough, this is the reason why not me but thousands of people not only think but will make sure that they will never be nothing but a dark shadow and nightmare of an ugly past, and if the masses ever rises will be againts the sandinistas. Thank you.

The era of the Sandinistas is over. Lost two elections, with Ortega in front. The entire liberal western world ,once, -perhaps a bit naive-,thaught Daniel Ortega was the only solution for Nicaragua. For Nicaraguas sake, I hope there will be no more reasons for the people to revolt and overthrow an elected Government. The Conservatives is given a new period. And should use it to create jobs and reasonable income for the common family. It is a long way to walk. But should be straight and some results on short terms. both to seek suport in the majority of the people of Nicaragua. And to show international investors a country with political consensus and long term stabillity. Also the potential of tourism should be exploited. There is a "billion dollar" marked out there. And the country is well known from the revolution years. And still there is a lot of symphaty among students, intelectuals and others. It will be of great importance how the new Government, manage its days in power.

In the 10 years the Sandinistas where in power, Nicaragua went only one direction, down! It seems like the country went back 20 years. Progress stop. The most precious resources, people, either left the country or had no reason to want to make progress. Any person wanting to improve themselves or create a market economy was labelled as an enemy. It was indeed a very sad situation. The sandinistas might have been good a guerrilla warfare, but had not clue on how to run a country. I still had dreams that my mother country will someday by a progressive place, where everyone will be able to make there dreams become a reality.
