Zeus
The greatest of the gods in the Greek mythology was called Zeus. He
was the father of gods and men, the protector of the kings, and
supporter of law and order. He avenged the ones who had broken
oaths and other offences. He watched over the state and his family,
the strangers and the supplicants. He controlled lightning and
guided the stars. He gatherd rain in the clouds, took care of the
changes of the seasons and regulated the whole course of nature. He
ruled from the top of the Olympus over the affairs of mankind. The
ancient stories tell that Zeus expelled his father, Cronos, and the older dynasties of the Titans. He sustained the attackes of the Giants
and the conspiracies of the other gods. Zeus then took the power
over heaven and air; Hades was given that
of the (dark)regions in the earth and Poseidon was given the wide regions of the sea.
The earth was left in the power of all three of them. The wife of
Zeus was Hera, queen of the gods. Their
marriage was one with much problems and a prototype of an earthly
marriage.
