Leto
In Greek mythology, Leto was the daughter of the Titans Coeus and Phoebe and the mother of Artemis and Apollo by
Zeus. Leto wandered through many lands
seeking a place to give birth to her children, because Hera, the wife of Zeus, had forbidden any place
under the sun to receive her. In the most common version of the
story, Leto gave birth while clinging to a palm tree on the island
of Delos, which Poseidon had covered
with waves to evade Hera's decree. Leto appears in many literary
works, including the Iliad, and
is generally associated with Artemis and Apollo.
