Destruction Of A Settlement During a violent earthquake of above 6 in the Richter Scale, buildings topple like toy blocks, death tolls are high, water, gas and electricity supply gets disrupted, diseases spread as water gets contaminated and decomposed bodies accumulate. The settlement will then be a disaster area, ruined by the earthquake. To make matters worse, roads and transport routes like railways are also crippled, making it difficult for rescue teams and aid to reach the scene of the disaster. Without immediate aid, death tolls might increase as water contamination and spread of epidemics claim more lives. After clearing up the initial damage, there are still many problems to follow-up. The residents will be left homeless and adequate shelters must be provided. Plans must also be made to help rebuild homes for them. Medicine, food, clothing and other daily neccesities have to be supplied to the survivors. Roads will have to be repaired, buildings re-build, supplies restored and clearing of debris done quickly. The re-building of an earthquake-stricken settlment is a tedious process and requires large amount of money. As to the human side of the disaster, apart from the high death tolls, those who lost their loved ones in an earthquake will also suffer from trauma and may need long-term psychiatric treament.
