Cat Language
We cats say things with our bodies in addition to our meows. The way we look can give hints to the way we feel. After reading this page, you'll be well-versed in cat body language and will understand what cats all over the world are saying. Just think of yourself as a Dr. Doolittle. :o)
- A loud meow: "Listen to me!"
- A hiss: "I'm annoyed. Go away."
- Swishing tail: "Go away."
- Growl: "I'm ready to attack."
- High-pitched howl (caterwaul): fighting or mating is going on
- Whiskers lifted and twitching and pupils widening: concentrating on someone or something
- Standing still, tail swishing, fur standing on end, snarl, showing teeth: alarmed and "Beware. I'll attack."
- Lying with belly up and vulnerable: feeling happy and secure; wants to play; showing trust if humans are allowed to pet tummy
- Ears bent forward: curious
- Ears held back to the sides: nervous
- Ears flattened: angry
- Ears alert and standing straight up: "I'm in a good mood."
- Purr: happy; mothers purr to calm their babies
- Scratching, urinating, or rubbing against something: "This is mine."
- Tail high: happy and content
- Tail low or drooping: unhappy and "Leave me alone."
- Reaching out paw without claws showing: making a friendly and affectionate gesture
- Extending paw with claws showing: warning sign
- Creeping slowly with belly close to the ground: stalking prey
