Social Studies
- Timeline- construct a timeline of World War II
- Add important players and events to your timeline by downloading public
domain pictures from the National Archives
Web Site
Geography
- Blend 2 parts flour, 1 part salt and ½ part water to a bread-dough
consistency
- Draw a map outline on the board and roll out the dough to cover the
shape.
- Add dough to form hills and montains and carve out dough to form rivers,
streams, and valleys.
- Let it dry several days and then paint the surface. Add names of
geographical areas by making toothpick flags (insert while dough is still moist)or
painting on names.
- Complete map with a legend
Language/Writing activities:
- Have students write essays on the following topics:
- How have you spent your freedom?
- If you were an American male, age 18, in 1942, would you have enlisted?
Why or why not?
- What would have happened if the outcome had been different?
- Will there ever be another World War?
- For further study, read fictional and non-fictional books about World War
II
- Memorize and perform important speeches by FDR, Churchill, etc.
Math
- Make a bar graph of Allied and Axis killed, wounded, MIA and POW, and
total casualties.
- Calculate gas prices and mileage using the average of 15MPG for a car in
the 1940's and gas at $.12 per gallon. Use a local map to work with familiar locations,
and a tri-state map for trips.
Science
- Study Frostbite (Battle of the Bulge). How do you prevent it? How is it
treated?
- Discuss survival in extreme heat and cold.
- Water purification - could soldiers drink water from Manila Bay? Why or
why not?
- Research penicillin and why it was such an important discovery.
- Study tropical diseases
Physical Education / Sports
- Marching- Boot Camp marching instructions (Drill
Field)
- What was the All-American Girl's Professional Baseball League?
- Write biographies on sports celebrities who served in the Armed Forces
during WWII (Joe DAmaggio, Joe Louis, etc.).
Art / Music
- Norman Rockwell's portrayal of "Rosie the Riveter"graced the
cover of the Saturday Evening Post. Study Norman Rockwell, his art, and how it depicts
this historical era.
- Study the Big Band Era. How did the music of the 40s reflect the
war?
- Various celebrities were drafted, and joined in the War effort. Research
who they were (i.e., Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable), and how they affected public opinion.
Life Skills
- Bake a "Victory Cake" (a cake using less sugar and fat) -
permission is pending to post a recipe originally published by Proctor & Gamble for
Crisco, and will be added to this website later.
- Plan a week's meals for a family using less sugar, butter, meat, coffee,
etc.
