Air Gap
The area of ocean between US and Great Britain that was too far out
to allow air cover from fighter aircraft.

or barracks duty (scrubbing floors, washing windows, cleaning latrines), Drill field or
classrooms.
Dysentery
An infection on the lower intestinal track producing pain, fever and severe
diarrhea, often with blood and mucus.
English Channel
The body of water that separates Great Britain from France.
Lieutenant
The lowest rank of commissioned officers is 2nd Lieutenant. Then, 1st Lt.,
Captain, Major, Lt. Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General (first star), Major General (two
star), Lt. General (three star), General (four star), General of the Army (five star)

The west coast of France.
Omaha Beach
A code name for an assault point on the Normandy coast.
Private
The lowest rank of enlisted personnel. Whether you were drafted or enlisted,
you start as a private. Next comes, Private 1st Class, Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant,
Technical Sergeant, Master Sergeant, First Sergeant.

A Prisoner Of War is only required to give his/her name, rank and military
serial number. The prisoners should be treated humanely. Further reciprocal arrangements
are to apply to a variety of areas including: sanitation, food and delivery of mail.
