March 11, 1942-
"Big News! General MacArthur was just transferred to Australia leaving Major-General Wainright in command. He's gone! Washington ordered him to organize the defense of Mindanao and from there he will proceed to Australia. He wanted to stay with us, but FDR ordered him out. His closest staff told him that it would be better to leave and fight elsewhere than to defy the President's direct order and bring disciplinary action.
        Remember how he always used to eat with us in the Mess Hall? We were his troops, his friends, and his family. Do you suppose that Washington has given up on us? They've taken away our General, and they haven't sent us any food, supplies or troops.
        Sam has been sitting on the beach all day, watching for the convoy he still believes is coming to help us. I'm beginning to think that we are the abandoned Americans."
