A NATION DIVIDED
STATE OF THE CONFEDERACY

I wish I was in de land ob cotton,
Old times dar am not forgotten,
Look away! Look away! Look away!
Dixie Land.
In Dixie Land whar I was born in,
Early on one frosty mornin',
Look away! Look away! Look away!
Dixie Land.
Den I wish I was in Dixie,
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand,
To lib and die in Dixie,
Away, Away, Away down south in Dixie,
Away, Away, Away down south in Dixie.

Jefferson Davis

For the Confederacy, the war had been more painful than it had for the Union. Most of the war was fought in the Confederacy, destroying farms, cities, and ruining the already troubled economy. The Confederate States of America was low on resources, money, and man power. The Army of Northern Virginia was poorly equipped and poorly armed. The Confederate currency was worth nothing. And the armies were running low on men. The Army of Northern Virginia had lost skilled irreplacable commanders such as Stonewall Jackson. Despite these downfalls, the Army of Northern Virginia was still winning battles against the Army of the Potomac.
