Winfield Scott Hancock Born in Pennslyvannia, Winfield Hancock graduated from west point in 1844. He served in the Second Seminole War, the Mexican War, and the Utah War. In 1880, Hancock ran as the Democratic Party candidate for President of the United States, but James A. Garfield defeated him. When the Civil War started, Hancock became a brigadier general of volunteers and was eventually promoted to major general. |
