Lee expected his invasion of the North would increase the antiwar feeling in the Union. Instead, it had an opposite effect. Because Lee's army was poorly equipped, it lived off the countryside. Rebel soldiers took food and other supplies giving the civilians worthless Confederate money. In the towns they occupied, the Confederates levied tribute. They also seized free Blacks and sent them south to slavery.
