A famous senator from South Carolina, Calhoun supported states rights and fought against the Compromise of 1850. At 68, Calhoun weak and had someone else read his speech in the Senate. Calhoun passed away a few weeks later. In his 43 page speech, Calhoun argued the equilibrium between the north and the south had been broken.
