Army Life

Entertainment

In the army, soldiers spent most of their time in boredom. For entertainment, soldiers gambled a lot. They held lice races, cockfights, horse races, and played cards. They also passed their time singing song like “Home Sweet Home,” “The Girl I Left Behind Me,” and “When This Cruel War Is Over.”

Food

Food in the army was miserable. The common beverage consisted of crude coffee or alcohol. In the Union army, the soldiers ate biscuits called “hardtack,” or “teeth dullers.” They were 3 inch squares, 1/2 inch thick, and extraordinarily hard. Stamped on the side, were the letters “BC”, which stood for “Brigade Commissary.” But the soldiers interpreted it as the year they were baked. The food in the Confederate army was no better. The rebels ate stale and moldy cornbread.
