Cotopaxi is one of the highest (strato)volcanoes in the world. It is located in central Ecuador, situated in the Andes Mountains, near Quito.``Since 1738 the volcano has erupted approximately 50 times. The eruption of 1744 produced such a loud noise that it was heard at Honda, Colombia, more than 800 km (500 mi) away. The 1877 eruption melted snow and ice on the summit, which produced mudflows that traveled 60 miles (100 km) from the volcano. The most recent eruption of Cotopaxi ended in 1904. The most recent activity was an increase in steam emissions, melting snow, and small earthquakes from 1975-1976.
