My name is Cameron and I live in Yakima, WA (Washington). I just graduated from West Valley High School last year and will be attending YVCC (Yakima Valley Community College) next year before moving on to the University of Washington.
I've joined each year since ThinkQuest started in '96. This is my 3rd and final contest and the best one by far. It has been a pleasure working with partners who are so talented and hard working. We are geographically so far apart, but by using email and ICQ we have come together to produce a very cool site. I am proud to be apart of Volcanoes Online.
The main task for me on the website was to create the Volcanoes Database. I ended up using PHP v3, a server-side HTML embedded scripting language, and a MySQL database. I originally developed a couple versions of the Volcanoes Database in CFML (Allaire's Cold Fusion) before translating it to PHP. One of the most complex parts of the application is the admin mode, which allows the three of us to login and 'ok' changes to the database.
I also flew down to Guatemala for 3 weeks primarily to see the volcanoes and other geological wonders of the area. It was an exciting trip up Volcán Pacaya, which made it all worth while. While I was in Guatemala I shot 11 rolls of film with my new camera and I have posted a selection of those shots for everyone to see on our website.
This year has gone by so fast. I couldn't have done it without all the support from everyone, so I would like to thank you all. First off, I must thank my family for letting me hog the PC. I would also like to thank: My Aunt Joanne & Uncle Jerry Flagel for their spelling and grammar help; Mitch Perala and Eric Conway for your support and Excellence In Mind; Adrian Teasdale for my Wireless Media email and the Nike CD; Dr. Richard Finch for the trip to Guatemala; EJ for The American Pageant; Rasmus Lerdorf and Zeev Suraski for the PHP support; Paris Treantafeles and Terry Katz for the TQ server help; Tony Huynh for TQ '97; Ron Graham for letting me barrow some books; Coach Berdnt and the West Valley HS Boys Basketball Team for a great season; and everyone else I may have forgotten to mention.
