The U-boat was one of Germany's most potent sea weapons during the First and Second World Wars.  During World War I, several thousand ships were sunk by u-boats alone.  U-20 was an early U-boat, as it was only the beginning of the war.   U-20 was commanded by Kapitan-Leutnant Schwieger.  Schwieger had G type torpedoes, which were extremely unreliable (Schwieger did not even expect the torpedo to sink the ship--only to see what damage it did).  He was therefore stunned to watch the ship go down in 18 minutes.
