Code of 1837

Another penetration in the Indian way came about in the code 1837. This was a book of code by which the Indians had to abide. It was readable and contained many illustrations drawn from history, literature and everyday life. The book was revered almost like the Bible and many Indian Civil Service members carried the code around in their saddle bags or their heads. This was one of the way the British managed to suppress the Indians.
