Paleomagnetism

Encarta's Dictionary defines the word Paleomagnetism, as follows, "in geology, the study of the changing orientations the earth's magnetic field. Such study aids in determining the course of other geological process such as plate tectonics. The reasons for the occasional polar reversal of the earth's magnetic field are not will understood, but currently the reversals themselves are recorded at sites of seafloor spreading the alignment of magnetic grains in igneous rock."
