Free-Forming in Ray Dream Designer is an art which takes time and patience.  Before we begin Free-Forming the main part of the mailbox, let's get familiar with the environment with which you will be working.

The free-form working box consists of three planes: a side plane, a bottom plane, and a drawing plane.

These planes are arranged much like the planes in the original perspective plane, but there is one important difference.  There are pink lines on the planes.   These are the extrusion paths.  They control the shape of the object.  The working box should look something like this...

In this view you can make custom objects the way you want them to look.

Along the side of this view you will notice that the toolbar has gotten some new buttons.  Here is a shot of the new toolbar...

To begin making the main mail box part first switch to the drawing plane view.  Do this by clicking View, Preset Position, Drawing Plane on the menu bar at the top of the program. You should get a screen that looks like this...

If you think you will have trouble drawing on this plane zoom in on the graph by clicking the zoom in button raydreambut008.GIF (445 bytes)  or the zoom button raydreambut006.GIF (449 bytes)  to increase the size of the grid.  After you have adjusted the view to suit your needs using the pen tool raydreambut009.GIF (378 bytes) to draw the following figure. (You might need to zoom in to draw)

raydream007.GIF (4842 bytes)
This View is in wireframe view.  Press raydreambut010.GIF (362 bytes) to switch to this mode.

After you have drawn this figure select the top point (The box at the top when the object is selected).  Then select the convert tool raydreambut011.GIF (345 bytes) on your tool bar.  Click and drag the the top point(The little box that the pen tool used) to the right until you get a figure that looks like this...

raydream008.GIF (4290 bytes)
View is still in wireframe view

After this object has been achieved switch back to the reference view by clicking View, Preset Position, Reference.  If you switched the view to Wireframe View, switch to Preview Mode by clicking the  raydreambut012.GIF (421 bytes) button to switch back.  Click Edit, Jump Out to return to the perspective window.  Now you have two objects in your scene.  Now all we have to do is arrange them and add a few more objects.

The additional object needed for this mail box is the mail box flag and a sphere.  To get a sphere use the same tool you used for the cylinder but put it on sphere mode.  The button looks like this  raydreambut003.GIF (446 bytes).  Just click and drag this icon into the scene and don't worry about the size we will resize it later.  The next object needed is the flap.  To get this right click on the main mail box object.  REMEMBER RIGHT CLICK and choose duplicate object.  After you press that the object is duplicated and you need to move one of them.  Just left click on one of the main mail box objects (The one duplicated) and drag it else where in the scene.  Now we are ready to create the mailbox.
