Now to begin the real work...

To Make A Mailbox

To make a Mailbox using Ray Dream Designer, the first step is to make sure that you are comfortable with the working environment.  Adjust the toolbars, windows, etc., until you are happy with their positions. The next step is to make sure that all three grid panels are viewable in the reference present view (this is the default camera view).  Now, so that you have an unobstructed view when the perspective window is maximized, close the shades and objects windows.  This will enable you to view the working environment without other windows getting in the way.

The first step of creating a complex object is to decide what objects it is composed of.  What makes up a mailbox?  How is the mailbox assembled?  How should it look from different angles of view?  These are questions that you should ask your self before making one.  For now we are going to make a standard mailbox with a post to hold it.   So now what do we need to do?

First we need to make the post.  The post can be either squared or rounded.  For this one, I will use a rounded post, a cylinder.  Click and hold the standard objects button raydreambut003.GIF (446 bytes).  When this button is held with a click you will see a new row of buttons appear with more objects like this...  raydreambut004.GIF (1287 bytes).   Select the cylinder, in this case the second from the right.  Now the button should show the cylinder rather than a sphere or other shape.  Example.  The standard objects button shows a sphere,  you select the box and the select object button instead of being a sphere before it changed to the box icon showing that the box is currently the object that can be inserted.   Now click and drag the cylinder icon into the perspective window to where you want the object to be inserted.  There should now be a cylinder in the workspace.

Now that the cylinder has been placed, you should resize it.  We have to stretch the object to the desired height and width.  To do this take the mouse and press the selection tool in the toolbar  raydreambut005.GIF (390 bytes).    Select the cylinder you created by either clicking on the object in the perspective window or clicking the name of the object in the hierarchy window, and then switching back to the perspective window.  Notice that when the object is selected you see small squares around the object and a box surrounding the object.  This is your object box.  Click and drag any of the squares to stretch the figure.   In this case click the square on the left panel and drag it to the right to make that side small.  Drag it until the object box is three boxes wide and 12 squares high.  Use the zoom tool raydreambut006.GIF (449 bytes) if you do not see the grid clearly. Repeat this process to the other sides of the square until the cylinder looks something like this...

The post can be made smaller.  If you want to make a smaller post, drag the box down to make.  Now that the post is complete, we need to make the main part of the mailbox.  To make this part drag the free form tool  raydreambut007.GIF (430 bytes)  into the perspective window.  The perspective window at this point will change and the following dialogue box will appear.

When this box appears put the name "Mailbox" in the name box and click ok.  Now we are ready to make our first free-form object.
