Terms The Election of 1800 Jefferson won the presidency because the Alien and Sedition Acts defamed the Federalist Party. "The Revolution of 1800" Jefferson claimed this would be a political revolution meaning changes in policy because of the election of a Republican. However, Jefferson kept many of the original policies induced by the Federalist Party. Burrs Conspiracy Wanted New York and other states to declare independence from the US. Louisiana Purchase In 1803, Jefferson purchased the territory of Louisiana from France fro $15,000,000. Originally, Madison and Livingston were sent to purchase New Orleans, but Napolean offered the entire Louisiana Territory. This showed loose constructionism in Jefferson as well. The Embargo Act, 1807 This Act prohibitted any trade with foreign countries, intended to hurt Britain for the impressment of sailors. This hurt the US more than it did Britain. 12th Amendment Corrected the flaw in the Constitution, putting the president and vice-president candidates of the same party on the the same ballot. Chesapeake Affair Four seamen were captured after a British ship fired on the Chesapeake. Barbary Pirates Robbed American ships off the Barbary Coast in Africa. Marbury v. Madison First case where Judicial Review was enacted. Judicial Review The ability of the Supreme Court to declare a legislation constitutional or unconstitutional. Election of 1808 James Madison won this election. But New England was still voting solidly for the Federalists. War hawks A group of young politicians that promoted the War of 1812. Personalities include Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun. The Hartford Convention Federalist wanted to denounce the War of 1812. The Death of the Federalist Party. Impressment Taking a sailor and forcing him to serve in another country's navy. Non-Intercourse Act Reopened trade with all countries except Britain and France. Macons Bill #2 Stated that the US would trade exclusively with Britain or France, whoever respected the US's rights first. Treaty of Ghent Ended the War of 1812. Did not solve the problem of impressment. The War of 1812 Battle of Tippecano, New Orleans Tippecano was won by Harrison, but it led to more frontier fighting.
