The following is an archive of the emails sent and received regarding permission to use freeware programs developed by others within Genetics: Gateway to the Future. Note: These listings are in no particular order. The following email was sent to Jerry Muelver, author of the book Creating Cool Web Pages with Perl, requesting permission to use a site search code found in the book: Hello Jerry, My name is Kate Stafford, and I am working on a website for the ThinkQuest competition, which challenges students to create an educational website on a topic of their choice. I've used several Perl scripts from your book, "Creating Cool Web Pages With Perl", and I'd like to get your official permission to use them before finalizing the site. Thanks in advance, -Kate The following response was received: The thing about Perl is that it is freeware. You can use any script you get your hands on, if the author gives permission. You are certainly free to use anything in my book as long as you have corrected any errors (http://www.hytext.com/coolperl/fixes.html , unless, of course, you are using the scripts to show how to =find= errors....). Let me know the URL -- I'd like to take a peek. If you have any problems, drop a note on TechTalk at www.hytext.com/forum and someone will steer you straight. ----- jerry The following email was sent to Dream Catchers CGI Scripts, requesting permission to use a guestbook Perl script found on the Dream Catchers web site: Hello, My name is Kate Stafford, and I am working on a website for the ThinkQuest competition, which challenges students to create an educational website on a topic of their choice. I've used the Hierarchical Menus that you posted on webreference.com, and I'd like to get your official permission to use them before finalizing the site. Thanks in advance, -Kate The following response was received: You may, of course, use them. However, they cannot then be used elsewhere. You are not passing them off as your own, I assume. It would be best if copyright code is maintained in script, and some sort of credit on a credit page. how's this? fine? Peter The following email was sent in answer: Peter, All copyright notices in the menu code are still intact. A credit notice and a link back to the Dynamic HTML Lab have been provided on a credits page. The site is an entry in an educational contest and as such is not commercial. The version on JavaBoutique is a little old, but if you found it from Gamelan, you probably have the newest version. The newest version is 2.8.2. To double check, its official homepage is: http://dragon.acadiau.ca/~013639s/java/TextScroll/ I'd be interested in seeing your site, if it is public, but it is by no means required.
