electric snow:
What are the biggest factors that influence the mainstream media's coverage (or lack thereof) of news?

peter phillips:
Media consolidation is one of the main reasons that the mainstream systems are failing to cover important news stories. This is a large question and if you want to learn more see Censored98 The News that Didn't Make the News,.

Reason #1. Tendency for mainsteam media to not want to run stories that offend their major advertisers.

#2. Main stream systems downsized after mergers. There fewer journalist and news people covering much broader territories. Foreign corrensondents have become almost non-existent.

#3. Few Journalists means that those remaining become dependent on Public Relations sources for stories. Half to 2/3s of the news today is prewritten or prespun by a PR flack working for Government of Corporations.

#4. Media focuses its systems on the uppermiddle class. This means that stories are selected and edited to appeal to people with money who will buy products that the media advertisers are selling. Newspapers have become a "product" with a target demographic audiance. Stories are selected to appeal to that demographic.

#5. Movement of media from being and information source to an entertainment source. News is entertainment. Stories are selected for their fear, titulation and sitmulation qualities.

electric snow:
What topics are neglected most frequently by mainstream media?

peter phillips:
Mostly stories about the decisions made by powerful people in both public and private bureaucracies (Government and Corporations) that affect millions of us. These decisions are made either very undemocratically or secretively.

electric snow:
What other sources can the public turn to for news?

peter phillips:
