Living in a country where the main channels are public service, but were we have all the comersial channels I say that the public service tv is better in all importent aspect. I get better and mor diversified programs, higer quality and i dont have to watch comersials in the films.
I've seen televison in USA and was not impressed. Nearly the same programs on every channel and comersials all the time. TV is to importent to be put solely in the hands of the comersial forces.

A swede,
I want to comment your thought about commersial and public service TV. I don't agree with you when you say that public service TV is better in all important aspect. I think it's important that both commersial and public servise TV exists. It brings out a useful competition between the two TV-systems - a competition for more viewers. The competition "force" the commersial and the public service channels to improve their programme offer and the qualite of the programmes to make sure that just they got most of the viewers.

Mabye you are right about the competition. But I stand by my opinion. Public service TV are of higher quality. The problem whit the competition is that the tendency is that the public service is moving towards the comersial tv. For to have more wiewers you have to be more mainstream. In sweden the tendency is clear. Lots of soaps, stupid talkshows, american series and so on. The quality tv is what gets lesser and lesser of transmitting time. Mainstream TV is slowly killing quality.

I have yet to see a public service announcemnt that has been able to compete with for profit shows in either quality or viewer approval.

Public subsidised television is another form of mind control by "Big Brother" ("1984", George Orwell). Governments already control access to information they wish disseminated; they do this through press releases and press conferences (which the media pick up and publish verbatum). If they're not providing propoganda, they're creating diversions to keep the public focus away from controversial areas.
