Obituaries

Even the poorest among us can at least count on commemoration via funeral and obituary. If you're famous, though, you get a real long one and it gets printed everywhere. It's even possible to purchase a book of obituaries, not of famous people, but just of regular folks. Now web sites and more web sites and Usenet serve as homes for obituaries in lieu of newspapers, but some sites are selective, and others just focus on famous people. I suppose these sites serve an important function, since there seems to be some confusion as to whether people are dead or not, even necessitating a site just listing dead folks. If you can't wait, don't worry about other people, give your own obituary a shot. It's a compelling psychological exercise. For a guideline, remember that essentially obits are death announcements with brief biographies, and they tend to focus on the positive. You might want to read some in your local paper, too.
