The Bible This is what the Bible says, in part, about death. This is not a complete listing -- the word alone appears hundreds of times -- rather it gives some idea of the intricate relationship bred between sin, death and redemption by the Judeo-Christian religions. As perhaps the most influential piece of literature in Western thought, it is critical to understand the position the Bible takes. Life is spoken of as transient, and death is spoken of as something that is feared. Perhaps it ought to be accepted and even praised for the opportunity it offers to be in heaven when spirit is separated from body.
By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return." Each man's life is but a breath. Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,
neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed--
The last enemy to be destroyed is death. I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have
sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body,
whether by life or by death.
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and
honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for
everyone.
Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, the body without the spirit is dead What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. Then I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write: Blessed are the dead who die in
the Lord from now on." "Yes," says the Spirit, "they will rest from their labor,
for their deeds will follow them." |
