| Sometimes in a tessellation, a row or column of polygons form
a straight line. Such an occurrence enables the offset technique
in which a row or column of polygons is moved along this straight
line to form a new tiling.
For example, in the following tessellation we can offset every
other column of polygons to create a new tessellation:

How to use offset to make new tessellations

However, offset is a very limited technique because most tessellations
do not have straight rows or columns. Offset polygons can be used,
nevertheless, to create new tessellations from scratch.

You may proceed to the templates page to access templates of squares,
equilateral triangles, equilateral hexagons, and other polygons
with which you can practice the offset technique.
