Joining is a technique of creating new tessellations based on pre-existing ones. It involves combining certain shapes into one "super-shape" and the repetition of this change throughout the design. Following is an example in which two joinings occur.

Example of Combination Technique (animated)

Joining technique applied twice to the 3.4.6.4/4.6.12 demiregular tessellation

Following is another example of the joining technique. Pairs of quadrilateral are joined together, resulting in a new tiling.

Here is yet another example of joining. First, groups of shapes that form an "X" are joined. Then groups of shapes that form a thin diamond figure are joined. Finally, pairs of adjacent equilateral triangles are joined.
