I am an artist and a quilter. I came to your tesselations site by way of a quilting link. The information in your site is great, and your layout is also. I am learning a lot. I am also glad to see info about one of my favorite artists: Escher! I hope that your website stays up for a very long time.

I just got on the Internet for the first week since serious burnout 5 years ago on chaos theory, grroots television production for 15 years and visioning proposals to ITV that costs hundreds of thousands. I am sorely disappointed in the chat rooms and your guests comments when the population of United States and world have such riches as shown in your inspiring exhibit. I guess an artist has to withdraw from the classroom.

The best part of your exhibit is the history/visuals section for me. I always hated math from calculus on because it was such a construct of human tediousness but the artisan continues in the finest of traditions as you have shown. Tremendous work.

I will submit a proposal for submissions of extensive visuals and details from the American Southwest and Mexico ASAP before I burn out again. We at the Rain House.org have extensive research and documentation of the units of tessel or as I used to regard it, chaos theory, visualized.

Very best wishes and thank-you so much for demonstrating the best the Internet marketplace has to offer!!!Please reply if you are interested.

You are January 8 of the Whole Internet Page a Day Calendar or I might not have found you. A pretty neat site. I've always been interested in Escher as an artist. Creating your own tesselations sounds interesting,... maybe if my kids were a little older...Thanks!

I am teaching art to 4th and 5th grades in a small district
in Texas. We are studying a unit on Escher and my students
were very intrigued by Escher. I came to this website to find more to share with them. It is a wonderful site and
has been very helpful. Thank you! I know my students will
love the material I can now share.

To all the wonderful educators & students , & fans of the master M.C. Escher :
Thanks for taking the time to let us artists know how the art has pleased you (& to some not-pleased) , your comments help us artists feel appreciation in more ways than you realize , your feed back is truly important to us and those who just pass through these pages while randomly surfing the net . To these random surfers your comments have served a great need for more interaction in society , even the detractors have made a contribution as well(albiet indirectly) , so ....With out further Ado....Thank you all and " Merry Christmass and a Happy New year , together hand &hand we walk into new uncharted territories in art and expression , onward and inward into the new century we share a seat on the planet bus ride to eternity .
Sincerely Hurricane Ramon

This is a fabulous site for educators! I wish I had found it earlier or sooner, while I was taking a geometry cl at school (college course). It still is very useful because I have printed several templates to place inside of my student portfolio.

I plan to share this information with my fellow classmates.

Whose ever responsible for this, keep up the great work! There is a lot of positive things about the "Web" after all!

Erin, - Wednesday, December 01, 1999

hey to all-

MADD awesome site. Big help in my report. I was assigned tessellations by last year's math teacher b/c I thought math was the antithesis of art. I still do, but only partially. SO I guess all you math teachers out there are laughing evilly to yourselves, "MUA- Hah hah hah hahhhhh.... another one has fallen into our clutches..." But you are wrong. You have earned respect, not undying devotion. NO ONE can beat Da Vinci... :)

sure your site will be visited by these volunteers.

Amy K. Preston, Lancaster, KY, USA - Wednesday, January 27, 1999

Quite a wonderful and fun site, and there was even more information than I was ever aware of, readily available... There is a lot of junk on the internet, but this site is truly worthwhile, and it would be nice to see a book based on the information you've amassed. I hope to be teaching an elementary school class about tesselations shortly, because I've always enjoyed Escher's humor and cleverness, and I think tessellations are a great way to get kids thinking about math and geometry. Best wishes. :->

Congratulations on a job well done!! I have always used a study of tessellations to "bridge" students who have completed Algebra I and are heading to Geometry. How wonderful to have this site as a reference. Students will find it more interesting than listening to me. Let's hope other mathematics teachers find this site.

Hey everybody!
I was interested in the beautiful works of art that are shown on this web site. Even though this was for extra credit (yes for Mrs. Thom), I enjoyed every minute of it. I especially liked the complicated patterns and the tilings beause of the brightness. This site was extremly unique and sophisticated in my opinion. K. Bye!

I think this is a cool website because it has neat patterns.
chuck, - Wednesday, November 18, 1998

I'm in Mrs. Thom's math class and she gave us this web site address. I liked this website and I learned a lot from it. There were a lot of designs and patterns and I learned what tessellations are.
Tina, - Wednesday, November 18, 1998

This web site is really cool!!!
Mike, La Crosse, WI, U.S.A. - Tuesday, November 17, 1998

Hi, I enjoyed reading and learning about tessellation, they are realy cool. I hope that we talk more about them in math, they seem like they would be nice to talk about. I'm glad you put this websight together, it's very thrilling.
Mitra, Palos Verdes, CA., USA - Monday, November 16, 1998

Hi! I'd like to compliment you on this beutiful and helpfull web sight that you have put together. I am a girl who is very interested in art and it's history, and when I got to your home page I felt great that somebody in this world actually cares to put their time and effort into such a thing. The pictures were very nice, but the way you related art, history, and math surprised me. I had a very fun time browsing and learning. I hope more people visit your exiciting web sight, they've been missing a lot. Bye!
Pardis, Palos Verdes, CA., USA - Monday, November 16, 1998

Thanks a lot! Your page really helped me understand tessellations. Thanks!
anonymous, - Monday, November 16, 1998

I really like it. Wonderfull section of art... Really great!
H. Akkoc, - Monday, November 16, 1998

Before I came to this site I had no idea what a tessellations was but now I know. This site was very informatory. This will be very helpful when we start learning about tesselations in math.
elsa hou, - Monday, November 16, 1998

This web site was extremely inciteful. It is evident that the tesselations were hard to design. These patterns are very beautiful and creative. This will be helpful when my class begins tesselations later in the year.
ashley matsumura(from Mrs. Mairs class), - Monday, November 16, 1998

I think this is a great site if you need help or information on tessellation. It is also fun to look at all the neat patterns.
nima ( from Mrs. Thoms class), - Monday, November 16, 1998

This web site teached me a lot about tesselations, such as the history of tesselations, essentials, mossaics and so on. Also I think the patterns were very creative. I think this web site is a great web site.
Jun Fujii, - Monday, November 16, 1998

The tessellations on this site are very beautiful. I have never seen more beautiful tessellations. I saw one tessellation in an Iranian church that was made from little pieces of mirror. It covered up the whole room and was the most gorgeous thing I have ever seen. The time I spent looking at this site was worth while! Thank You very much! Bye-Bye!
Michelle R. (Mrs.Thom's class), - Monday, November 16, 1998

It's amazing how much research has gone into tesselations and how deep math goes. I never knew so much about polygons and geometry show in tesselations. I really enjoyed the variation of diagrams which taught me alot about what tesselations really are and how complex simple geometry can get. I enjoyed reading and going through this very neat and well thought site.
Ben Huang, - Monday, November 16, 1998

I think that this site was very superb. I enjoyed it very much. I wish you good luck on the contest!
Philana Chiu, RPV, CA, USA - Monday, November 16, 1998

Very intersting web page! I learned what a tessellation was!
Annie, Rolling Hills, CA, U.S.A. - Sunday, November 15, 1998

My Honors Geometry classes are being given a project on M. C. Ecsher and to create a tessellation. This is definitely going to be a site they will be given as a resource. I printed the site map and will share it with them. Awesome site. I enjoyed it very much.
kathleen Bell, Chelmsford, MA, USA - Saturday, November 14, 1998

I enjoyed the collection of tessalations and other artistic images. I am particularly interested in the work of the Dutch artist M.C. Escher, who was born near where I was born.
I would like to point out a few errors though. First Escher was born in Leeuwarden, not Leenwarden, which is the provincial capital of Friesland, in The Netherlands. That city is now referred to by its Frisian language name Ljouwert. Secondly, many of the enlargements are not properly matched with their thumbnail versions, which is a pity for a fine website.
Thanks for the interesting work you did for us visitors.

Without a doubt, one of the "Coolest" sites I've ever come across. Totally Awesome!

I really like your site! There are many kinds of of shapes and different sizes in all the pictures. I liked the mosaics especially.
Brian Oh, R.P.V, CA, U.S.A - Thursday, November 12, 1998

What a great site! Before this (it was an extra credit project) I had never even heard of tesselations. They are very neat to learn about and very interesting things!
Kali Nelson, Los Angeles, CA, USA - Wednesday, November 11, 1998

YOUR SITE IS GREAT!!! Escher has always been one of my favorites. His works are so fascinating. Wish I could get to San Diego as there is a show of his works at the art museum there until sometime in January. Tesselations are fun!!!
Berdene Scott, Simi Valley, CA, USA - Tuesday, November 10, 1998

Nice job Kendrick. Hopefully this years power question will deal with tesselations.

I just wanted to thank the creator of this fabulous site. It explained a complex subject with such comprehensive clarity that you deserve an award.

I'm impressed to no end.

Despite the fact that y'all ( can ya tell I'm from Texas?) have probably heard this a lot, this site is my savior !!!! I had a Geometry project due three days before I had even started my tessellations , and this site was the sole reason that I turned it in on time !!!!!!!! THANK YOU !!! :)
Alison , Burleson, TX, USA - Tuesday, October 27, 1998

Perhaps people already know about this, but if you are a student at Harvard -- make sure to take Dr. Arthur Loeb's Design Science classes. He was good friends with M.C. Escher and R. Buckminster Fuller and he teaches the math, aesthetics and history in two Visual and Environmental Studies (VES - at the end of the catalog!!!) classes. Ask him about the Philomorphs, too.
Jack Gray, Cambridge, MA, 02138 - Sunday, October 25, 1998

Very cool page. We touched on Escher in art class last year but I threw out my info and this really helps me with a math project I have this year. For all the art enthusiasts or pursuers of knowledge, thanks!
PS- hope you fared well in the contest.
Robert Friars, Sussex Corner, NB, Canada - Friday, October 23, 1998

Terrific page. Thinkquest seems like a terrific contest. The sight was enjoyable and informative. I look forward to showing it to my kids who have learned a little about tesselations in middle school math.
Pat Byram, Arlington, VA, US - Thursday, October 22, 1998

Congratulations on your wonderful site. Without having seen the other contestants, I think you should win the Thinkquest contest, whatever it is.

Eric Broug, Amsterdam, Netherlands - Tuesday, October 20, 1998

Yet another one of those indispensibly "useless" sights.
This is great.

J Kaspar, TLH, FL, US - Monday, October 19, 1998

Lovely site!
Take a look at the applet on my home page, it generates cool patterned square tiles using a reaction-diffusion-like algorithm.
Joel Weichsel, - Friday, October 16, 1998

Thanks for all the great information and images. I was particularly interested in the Escher pages. Having visited the Alhambra and seen the tile work, learning that Escher had visited there made the experience even more valuable.
Randall H. Garacci, Arroyo Grande, CA, USA - Thursday, October 15, 1998

This was a very interesting and informative site....without this, i couldn't have done my project on Ester for geometry

Thanx so much!
Patty, Ocean, NJ, United States - Monday, October 12, 1998

By far this is the greatest page about tessellations that I have ever seen!!! My brain is now "totally tessellated" thanks to you guys! See ya, I'm going to pinocchio's. Alok, let's play Mario Kart.
Danny, Stroudsburg, PA, U.S. of A. - Sunday, October 11, 1998

From one ThinkQuest web page maker to another let me tell you that I greatly enjoyed your site! I learned briefly about tessellations in my art classes throughout school, but nowhere near the amount of info your site provides!!! It is beautifully designed and filled with content. Kudos on a site so well done! :-)

What a gorgeous website! I didn't know that the background graphic I created (a fractal) was a tesselation when tiled. Now I have a fancy word for it! Thanks for increasing my vocabulary!
Joe Cliburn, MS, - Friday, October 02, 1998

Yours is by far the most beautiful and informative web site I have ever seen. (Those qualities are strongly correlated!) Thanks.
Mark Newman, New York, NY, USA - Thursday, October 01, 1998

What a great site..many thanks for putting it together.I really enjoyed my visit..
Bob Alexander, Toronto, ON, Canada - Thursday, October 01, 1998

This is way cool!! As a Spanish and Art teacher I can use tessselations in my classes. Fellow Spanish teachers: these are great to practice numbers/colors vocabulary!! Fellow Art teachers: think of the groovy mobiles your students can make!!

Pam Hall, Portland, OR, USA - Wednesday, September 30, 1998

I have a friend who teaches high school mathematics--heard about tessellations from her. I have always enjoyed Escher's work. Now I plan to tell my teacher friend about this site!
Sheila, Ripley, MS, USA - Tuesday, September 29, 1998

Thought I might see the hand or influence of Kevin Lee, author of Tesselmania, in this activity. I write software that creates patterns in repeat, some of which turn out to be tesselations, but have not attacked tesselations systematically except for polyominoes. Good exposition here.
Bill Jones, Syracuse, NY, USA - Tuesday, September 29, 1998

Very very few efforts on the Web are in this league. You have combined theory and illustration in a single seamless and eye-popping display. Thoughtful design, I'm happy to see, is alive on a Web that far too often substitutes application with tawdriness. Totally Tessellated is eminently bookmarkable.

Rahul Goswami, Dubai, NA, U.A.E. - Monday, September 28, 1998

What an interesting site! I am amazed at the many forms and interesting artistic and mathematical creations found throughout your site. Congradulations, and good luck to all of you!
Jason Ford, Clifton, VA, USA - Sunday, September 27, 1998

Totally Tessellations is totally wonderful. We would like to link to it both at the Science Center on our web site and in our new teaching unit- Chaos, Inq.: The Science of Surprises.

What a tremendous resource! Thanks 10^6.
Karen Newell, Minnetonka, MN, US - Saturday, September 26, 1998

Wow, I remember doing these a long, long, time, far, far away...... hey, I haven't really looked around yet, but do you have that one with the birds?? from black to white over a field?? That one's really cool...... What exactly do you do in a thinkquest page?? Explicame por favor
Akshay Patil, PVE, CA, USA - Monday, September 21, 1998

The site map and other navigation aids, and the simple animation incuded where it is relevent, make this site a real delight to use. It sets a new standard for educational sites in the field of mathematics, I think.
Thomas A. Brown, Phoenix, AZ, USA - Sunday, September 20, 1998

As a math teacher, I must say I'm very impressed! This will certainly be a site I bookmark to refer my students to. Nice job!!!
Jennifer Amos, Castle Rock, CO, USA - Tuesday, September 15, 1998

Great site! Please see our web page for an inexpensive source of tessellation manipulatives (Pattern Blocks Plus). Also, you'll find more information in the message board section of this site.
Jay Farlow, Huntington, IN, USA - Tuesday, September 15, 1998

Well, this is one of the best websites I have ever seen. Being a web designer myself, I am frankly floored by the complexity, completeness, and quantity of educational and exciting information displayed here. The site designers have impressed me and give me something to look to for truly top-notch web designs. Please accept my congratulations on a job well done. Good luck with the competition! I have no doubt that you will do very well, if my comments are any indication of the quality of the site.
