Description: |
Book jacket of The Topkapi Scroll*Geometry and Ornament in Islamic Architecture, by Gülru Necipoglu with an essay by Mohammad al-Asad, published by the Getty Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities. |

Notes: Notice the complex tessellation in the center of the book jacket which is partially obscured by the red hexagon object and the various flat-shaded, large triangles and trapezoids dispersed throughout the design. If you isolate the blue-colored figures in the design in your mind, you can another large-scale tessellation hidden in the design! The blue regular polygons which look almost like circles and the small dark blue diamonds form the skeleton of a larger tessellation. You might want to trace on a sheet of paper the skeleton formed by these blue near-circles and these small dark blue diamonds to see more clearly what kind of tessellation they create. Notice that this tessellation is a large-scale design, whereas small-scale designs can be seen in the white, red, and orange shapes.
