Over the course of his life, Escher created a tremendous number
of images in several different media. He was skilled at the woodcut
(the cutting with gauges in a side-grained block of wood, usually
pear), lithographs, and wood-engraving (engraving with burns on
an end-grained block). His subject matter can be divided into
the following categories.
