About This Site

    What is this?

Totally Tessellated at http://library.advanced.org/16661/ is a World Wide Web site intended to be a helpful and interesting resource regarding tessellations. It is only an basic introduction into the complex world of tessellations and tilings, but should serve a variety of people's interests. The site is an entry in the 1998 ThinkQuest competition sponsored by Advanced Network & Services. In short, the contest is for high school students and involves the creation of an educational Internet World Wide Web site. So, if you are a teacher and use the material on this site as part of your lesson plans, please tell us about it.

    Why tessellations?

    1. Tessellations are interesting and beautiful from both artistic and mathematical perspectives.
    2. Learning about the nature of tessellations and why they work helps develop visual, geometric, spatial, artistic, and mathematical skills.
    3. Tessellations have ancient origins in many cultures and thus is a subject of cultural enrichment.

    Why the Internet?

    1. The World Wide Web is an advantageous medium for a highly graphical topic like tessellations. Many color images and animations can be included, and materials can be added and updated easily and inexpensively.
    2. Many schools now have reliable access to the Internet, increasing the utility of this site.
    3. The World Wide Web allows for interactivity which aids the learning process.

    Who did this?

The three designers and creators of this site are Alok Bhushan of McLean, Virginia; Kendrick Kay of Martinez, GA; and Eleanor Williams of Palos Verdes, California. All three graduated from high school in 1998, and all three coincidentally will be attending Harvard University as freshman in Fall 1998.

    How was this done?

Research for the site material relied heavily on books and less heavily on pre-existing material on the World Wide Web (partly because comprehensive material did not exist on the Internet). However, images of tessellations and related objects were obtained from both book and Internet sources.

The site design, graphics creation, HTML editing, and CGI scripting were done on a Macintosh computer. The main computer software packages used were Adobe Photoshop (image processing), Adobe Illustrator (vector drawings), GoLive Cyberstudio (web page editor and site design tool), and GifBuilder (animation composition). All of these programs are highly recommended. Java applets were created using Sun Microsystems' Java Development Kit 1.1.4.

Additionally, testing of the site was performed from a variety of browsers (i.e., Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.x, 4.x, Netscape Navigator versions 2.x, 3.x, 4.x) and operating systems (i.e., Macintosh OS System 7.x, Microsoft Windows 3.x, 95, various flavors of UNIX).
